State of emergency lifted

The state of emergency enforced from noon on 4 November 2015 has been lifted.

The resolution issued with the declaration of the State of the Emergency by the President Abdulla Yamin Abdul Gayoom said that the government had received confirmed information that a group of people are trying to use dangerous explosives and firearms in the country.

And the resolution continued to say that it could become a danger to the lives of the people and the security of the nation.

This was announcement of termination of the State of Emergency was made by Attorney General Mohamed Anil.

The Attorney General said that the early termination of the 30-day State of Emergency follows progress in ongoing investigations by security forces, arrest of several people on suspicion of possession of weapons, and international organisations’ calls to terminate the emergency as soon as possible.

Attorney General Anil said that the President decided that the State of Emergency would be lifted effective from 5 p.m. today.

The Attorney General said that minimizing the impact on tourism is also one of the reasons for the President to revoke the State of Emergency.

“The President gratefully appreciates the cooperation from the beloved people of the country to the Maldivian state, Government and Security Forces.” Anil said.
