Taxi driver arrested for trying to rape passenger

A taxi driver has been arrested in Male’ for trying to abuse a 21-year-old female passenger.

Police said the incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. tonight, soon after the passenger boarded the taxi near Social Centre in Majeedhee Magu to go home.

The driver, a 56-year-old man, has been arrested. According to sources, the man has been identified as Ali Rasheed, Haa Alif Maradhoo.

Speaking to Sun, a family member of the 21-year-old girl said the same driver had attempted to abuse the girl when she boarded the same taxi near Justice Building on Thursday.

“My sister said he (the driver) was referring to himself as brother. Where can brother take you, he said, and he tried to touch her. She told him to immediately stop the car. That’s when my sister got out,” the family member told Sun.

The case is being investigated by the Criminal Investigation Department, Police said.
