Spokesperson of Gaumee Itthihad Party (GIP) Abbas Adil Riza has said that campaign activities of ‘Forward with the Nation’ coalition are ongoing at an appropriate pace, and that some members of Adhaalath Party wish to sustain the coalition.

This remark by Abbas comes after Adhaalath Party said that they might have to leave the four-party coalition unless more effort is made by the coalition to campaign for the upcoming presidential election.

He expressed confidence that Adhaalath Party would remain with the coalition, as majority of its members would not support leaving the coalition.

Abbas acknowledged that discord exists within Adhaalath Party, but said that the party is run democratically.

He said that several members of the party did not support the decision to enter a coalition with President Waheed.

“I am confident that we have Imran’s support. While they decided to form a coalition with President Waheed, there were some members who wanted to form a coalition with PPM instead. What we saw last night was something like that. Even though there are some members who don’t support sustaining the coalition, most members support sustaining the coalition,” he said.

President of Adhaalath Party Imran Abdullah told Sun Online earlier that campaign activities of ‘Forward with the Nation’ coalition are not being conducted as much as they had hoped.

Abbas said that the campaign activities are ongoing at a suitable pace, and that ‘painting walls and hanging flags across the streets’ are not the only ways to campaign for the presidential election.

The council of Adhaalath Party held a confidential council meeting last night to discuss an issue proposed by three members, during which it was decided that the party might have to leave the coalition unless adequate efforts are made to campaign for the presidential election.
